What is PPE and where to buy it from? How much will it cost?

If you recently completed your White Card course and have plans to enter a construction site, you'll want to be ready and make sure to stay safe. While most employers do provide PPE, it can be handy to own your own.

What is PPE?

PPE stand for Personal Protective Equipment. It typically refers to the following:
  • Safety glasses. Could also be goggles depending on use case.
  • Hearing protecting. Could be plugs, muffs, or both!
  • Retro reflective vest.
  • Hard hat.

These are the four basic pieces of PPE that anyone on construction sites is expected to have at hand. There are more specialised pieces of PPE that you may use for different tasks like gloves, safety boots etc. We're just going to focus on the four basic pieces of PPE in this article.

Where can I buy PPE?

PPE can be found in many shops, but your best bet is probably Bunnings warehouse. They stock a large amount of PPE, so you're almost guarantee to find PPE that suits your body and your wallet.
The other benefit from going to Bunnings warehouse is that there are plenty of employees ready to help you. If you are unsure about the fitting of the PPE, wether to buy glasses or goggles etc., simply ask and you'll get help in no time.

How much does PPE cost?

Here is the receipt of me purchasing the four basic pieces of PPE a few weeks back:

As you can see, it came to $38, or just under $10 per piece of PPE. You can absolutely buy more expensive and comfortable equipment if you want, there is plenty to pick from. But for just the simple stuff, I would budget $40, or $10 per piece of equipment.
